Being a Dad |
| On November 6, 1996, my life changed forever.
That was the day I became a father, and what a ride it has been!
Until that day, I had known that one day I would have children,
and for almost 9 months, I tried to prepare myself, but until Julie
arrived, I had know idea how cool being a dad
would be!
I Love my dad! He's taught me a lot! Heck, he's done more than any other man I know! He was even the Mayor here in Lynchburg for 4 years! I know that I can ask my dad to do anything and he will help me when I need it, point me in the direction when he knows I can do it myself, and if he doesn't know how or doesn't know the answer, he won't BS, he will find out and then tell me. We have fun together, we work together, we like each other! That is the kind of relationship I want to have with my kids! I can't begin to tell you how great it feels to come home after a stress filled day, tired and ready to forget the daily grind, and hear 1 or both of my girls yell "Daddy" as I open the door. It's like this miracle pill or something, all of the crap from my day just melts away! That's how cool being a dad is! I always tell someone who asks me to describe what it's like being a dad, that until they have a child of their own, I can only give them examples of being a dad (like the one above). When they finally have that first child, they will understand why I couldn't describe it. Then I heard a song from one of my favorite bands. I was driving down the main strip here in Lynchburg and I was listening to the latest Creed album I had recently purchased. I think I had listened to the whole CD at least once, but you know how it is when you get a new CD - the first couple of times you listen, you are trying to get into it. Well, this cool song with a funky beat ends and the next song stats with a soft acoustic guitar and I listened to the lyrics for the fist time. By the time the chorus came I was crying because it was the first time I heard someone describe what I had always said couldn't be described! Here was this guy singing and I could feel the lyrics, I knew exactly what he was saying! After the song was over, I played it again! I actually held my remote control in my hand and each time the song ended, I hit the back button to hear it again! I think I played it 4 or 5 times! Rarely am I touched by a song like I was with this one! Finally I let the CD continue, and I half listened to the next 3 songs, and then something really cool happened, when I thought the CD was over (because the song list on the back of the CD said what was playing was the last song) my song plays again! Creed had added it again at the end as a "bonus". I guess they know how cool the song is! I don't expect someone without children to be blown away like I was, but when I played this song for my best friend, Daniel, he fell in love with it too (he has 2 children also) and we went to B&N just so he could buy the CD. Well, for what it's worth, here is the song and lyrics. To me it describes being a dad! With Arms Wide Open From the album Human Clay by
