Return to Legendary!
Yes, yes. I'm the reason SM is late this month. I fully intended to write this
while I was in Minnesota, but the spirit didn't move me while I was there. (I was too busy
sleeping and goofing off). However, my muse has struck me while at work, so here we go! I
did indeed drive to Minneapolis non-stop on the 24th of April. The weather was fabulous
all week, and I spent some time in Wisconsin, too. (Tip of the hat to Sara, a big fan of
SM. It was great to finally meet you face-to-face!) I drove through the Midwest (Chicago,
Indianapolis, Louisville), and gas prices have hit the $2 a gallon level! The Mall of
America was massive, but when you boil it down, it's still just a mall. I even caught a
jewel of a ballgame in the Metrodome between the Twins and Yankees. Yes, they still hate
Chuck Knoblauch in Minneapolis. My thanks to Matt and Ali for putting up with me all week!
Tales from the Commonwealth
Very little has gone on here since the last SM. There was the birthday (thank you for all
your kind wishes, cards, donations), and softball season has finally begun! The trick now
is to get back into shape before the season ends. My trip to San Diego has been rerouted
to NYC instead. The only other thing worth noting is that I have achieved a new level of
hilarity. I made my teammate laugh so hard he threw up. That's a mental image that should
last you until June's issue.
I was thinking about historical occurrences recently after it was noted that Reagan had
been shot twenty years ago. As old as that makes me feel, I can remember sitting in the
living room floor watching the news the night that happened (30 March 1981). It was also
twenty years ago (12 April) that the space shuttle Columbia ushered in a new era of space
flight. Commander John W Young and Pilot Robert Crippen became overnight celebrities while
we watched flight STS-1 on TV during elementary school.
It's been fifteen years since Chernobyl (nuclear meltdown), the Statue of Liberty
(rededicated), and the bombing of Libya. In fact, a few weeks ago my Dad mentioned he had
been an amputee for 23 years and 8 months meaning he had lived as long without his left
arm as he had with it. And on 28 January, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded 73
seconds after liftoff.
Hairstyles
I got bored, and shaved my head. It's now in the velveteen stage, though I think I'm
ditching the goatee.
